Hangzhou is poised as a global hub for new economy

1 city, 10 case studies, 53 conferences ambassadors; that sums up nicely the successful “Hangzhou PLUS: Business Events Roadshow”!

The recently concluded event in Beijing took the audience on an immersive journey through the development of the attractiveness of Hangzhou and the influence of the city as a prime congress destination for new economy.

This event, organized by Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV and Tourism, showcased the city’s offerings as a top meeting destination - introducing Hangzhou’s new economy, recognising congress ambassadors’ contributions and unveiling Hangzhou's support program for events.

The event was geared to promote Hangzhou as a global hub of innovation to meeting planners and local suppliers, bringing in 60 distinguished local association leaders from different academic disciplines and 18 Hangzhou-based event companies and hotels. Joining the event also were Zhang Ansheng (Hangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV and Tourism), Tian Mei, also a “Hangzhou Conference Ambassador” (Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology), Noor Ahmad Hamid (ICCA), Wei Dan (China Association for Science and Technology) and Tang Xue (Hangzhou International Expo Center).

Professor Dr. Tian Mei, a full professor of diagnostics imaging and nuclear medicine, was invited to the event to talk about her role in ground breaking research, and her ambassador status in creating a Community of Practice (CoP) conference in nuclear medicine. One of the world's top 5 esteemed nuclear medicine academics, Professor Tian is a full professor at Zhejiang University Medical Center who has served in academic positions as a clinical fellow at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute / Brigham and Harvard Medical School.  She is one of the many overseas professionals who returns and works in the homeland following Chinese government’s policy for bringing back overseas Chinese talents in providing intellectual support for the country’s development. Today, Professor Tian is a congress ambassador who is now using her influence to organise conference for the scientific community to share scientific discoveries, new clinical guidelines and cutting-edge interventions in the field of nuclear medicine and diagnostics imaging. And this, is just one of the many new conferences happening today in the city.

Hangzhou accommodates a slew of reputed universities and research institutions, such as Zhejiang University, Westlake University and Alibaba DAMO Academy, which have attracted a large number of top-notch talents. The Conference Ambassador Programme, delivered in partnership with local university, works with the academic community to bid for events to showcase the strength of its knowledge economy. Since the launch of the Congress Ambassador Programme in 2011, Hangzhou’s 53 conference ambassadors have secured over 100 conferences which benefits the city in the long term through economic and social progress.

Highlight of the event was that the Roadshow was designed deliberately following the context of a scientific congress. The foyer area of the venue was set up as an exhibition area specially for “poster presentation”, highlighting an impressive portfolio of Hangzhou’s top 10 conferences case studies in different categories. All case reports were presented on poster boards, offering a true experience to international conference delegate.

As the first chapter of Hangzhou’s Business Events roadshow in 2019, the event highlighted Hangzhou’s rising profile as an innovator of new economy and it will be followed by another event targeting the corporate meetings market in October.
