Athens is rising as a top MICE destination, now ranked 26th in the world’s top convention tourism destinations according to the ICCA 2017 Annual Report. Athens’ selection to host prestigious medium- and large-scale conferences has been showcasing the great potential of the Greek capital as a MICE destination, consolidating the local industry’s long-term experience and expertise in such events.
This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) aims to further promote Athens as a top international choice for association events through a course of strategic actions.
The ACVB is a highly engaged ICCA member with a close collaboration that is reinforced by the former’s active participation in the ICCA Mediterranean Chapter and the ACVB’s General Manager, Ms. Eliza Tsolakou being the Chapter’s Chair.
Taking this cooperation one step further, the ACVB is investing in ICCA’S Association Relations Partner (ARP) Programme: a strategic move to build valuable relationships with credible partners in the associations industry and highlight the destination’s potential, credibility and expertise in the market, along with its developing knowledge economy.
“Athens is a city booming with knowledge. Key industry sectors- either already developed or currently growing- can inspire association events. Such sectors are the ones of culture, sports, IT, medical, pharmaceutical and maritime. Developing these areas means we will be able to host a wider range of relevant association events”, states Mr. Alexis Galinos CEO, Athens Development & Destination Management Agency.
“To further highlight the city’s significant knowledge economy, the ACVB is already working closely with local leading medical, academic and business professionals to bid for and host conferences in Athens. In this context, an official Ambassadors Programme is underway and will be launched within 2019”, says Ms. Eliza Tsolakou, General Manager at This is Athens-Convention & Visitors Bureau.
“Athens has a proven record of conferences and events of any scale that underline its high standards of quality and professionalism. Still we foresee great potential for additional growth, and we are all working towards supporting the visitor economy in a way that will lead to meaningful development for visitors and residents alike. Athens has a number of exciting projects underway. The newly founded This is Athens & Partners public-private partnership will develop and implement projects that will boost economic growth and job creation. Even more, there is a great deal of interest in the city, with important stakeholders investing both in the hospitality and capacity aspects. Athens has every reason to look forward to the future”, adds Mr. Alexis Galinos.
