As the executive director of a very small medical association, I face many challenges on a daily basis. I am the only full-time employee, so I wear many hats in one day: website designer, media representative, fiscal representative, decision maker, customer relations, …you can imagine how big this list can get. I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to work with ICCA for quite some time now and they have been able to help me solve problems, avoid problems and work to improve our relevance, etc. As you can imagine, I often feel like I am on an island all by myself, but I take great comfort and always know that I have support from all of the colleagues I have connected with through ICCA.
Between the ICCA staff themselves and the many contacts I have made and kept in touch with after ICCA events, I feel like we owe ICCA a wealth of gratitude. Now, in the chaos that represents our current situation, ICCA has once again provided me with extremely valuable tools. With no in-house designer, even making the simple graphic that “this event is open for business” would cost me valuable time and more importantly money. When I found numerous links to easily download, it was more valuable to us than most of you can likely imagine. I was planning to attend IMEX in Frankfurt as a hosted buyer to begin networking to source a venue for our 2023 World Congress. Without the ICCA resources, the cancellation of this event would be debilitating to us. Hosted buyer opportunities are my only resource for looking at possible venues and meeting with many international representatives in such an engaging and informative platform.
Before Coronavirus, I had already taken advantage of many of the valuable resources offered by ICCA including live events, seminars, and database searches. I have even sat down with an ICCA representative who went through our bid document with me and made strategic and extremely useful suggestions. This too was not only an extremely useful opportunity but cost us nothing and came from a resource I have come to trust. You cannot put a price on that.
I have attended many ICCA events and each one has given me a wealth of valuable information. Information can be shared virtually but that cannot replace the personal contact and conversations that can evolve when you have the opportunity to spend days with a group of colleagues in formal and informal settings. I am proud to be part of ICCA as an association member and would encourage any association, large or small, to consider this great opportunity.
I look forward to the day that I can once again join these colleagues in a face to face conversation.
